Allahabad: Cow slaughter is banned I the State, but it continues to flourish under the nose of police and administrative officials in Lakhanpur village on the outskirts of the city.
Opposing it is not the hindu outfits but a muslim woman Sabiha Begum, who happens to be the village pradhan. She is being supported in her endeavour by Kaisar Begum, a member of the block development committee.
People of Lakhanpur wake up to the painful cries of cows being slaughtered, complained Sabiha Begum, when TOI team reached the village on Tuesday morning. She believes that irrespective of religious taboos, the animal should not be slaughtered.
Sabiha has launched a campaign against cow slaughter. However, with the police and the administration not keen on stopping the practice, her cries are proving to be a voice in the wilderness. Sabiha said that she had brought the issue to the notice of the station officer of Dhoomanganj and other police authorities but no action has been taken to end the practice. "My fight against this cruelty will continue," she said, adding. "It is sad to see that a few cows are slaughtered even in milking stage."
Sabiha had registered a complaint with the Dhoomanganj police a month ago. The SOG team even arrested two persons but they were later released. Previous station officer Shail Kumar Singh acknowledged the report of cow slaughter in the area.
